AU domain name appraisal. 2008/06/09 11:29
Hi All,
How do we really know what a .au domain name is worth? I have owned a particular domain name for over 11 years and truely believe that it will be worth quite a bit.

My biggest problem is knowing how much value to place upon it and where best to advertise it. Melbourne IT have a generous free listing service for domains for sale, however they also wnat a whopping 30% of the sale price!

My Domain Name is redhot.com.au and as you can see it is short and catchy and would suit a wide range of services.

Any ideas on where I could get it appraised or an idea on how much its worth would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael

You have a good domain name, it is short and memorable. It can be used for a variety of purposes.
Below you will find some information to help you evaluate your domain name.

There are several factors determining the value of your domain name. I will outline only some of these.

- Marketability
- Name Length
- Brand Recognition
- Search Engine Popularity
- Grammatical value

Marketability
How many words are in your domain name? Are there any hyphens or numbers?
Generally, a single word domain name is more valuable than a multi-word name. Hyphens and numbers within the name will reduce the value as well. For example: red-hot.com.au is les valuable than redhot.com.au

Name Length
Generally, a domain name with less characters (grammatically correct word) is more valuable than a long domain name.

Brand Recognition
Does a visitor know what your web site is about even before they visit your site?
For example: shoes.com.au tells you exactly what you are going to find on that web site. redhot.com.au may have several connotations as to the products or services you are offering.

Search Engine Popularity
Are people searching for the products or services described in the name of your domain?
Again, "shoes" is a popular search term.

Grammatical value
Does it sounds correct, is it spelt correctly? Is it plural or singular?
For example: shoesshop.com.au is less valuable than shoeshop.com.au

The .au domain name valuation is a new "science" in Australia and it will take a few months before we get a more precise indication as to evaluating .au domain names.

Perhaps the best way to sell your domain name at the moment is to say "make an offer" and test the market.

If you are looking for a web site to sell your domain name you should visit DomainShed.com.au DomainShed charge only 10% of the sale price.

Hey OzNick,

I think redhot.com.au is a pretty good domain and has great marketing potential. Obviously to get the money you're after you'd need to find the right type of buyer.

I think it would work well as a specials/discount products type of e-commerce site.

FYI, if you looking to list your domain without the MelbIT 30% commission and still want to sell via an accredited auDA domain name registrar, feel free to check out my website: www.domaintradingpost.com.au we don't charge the seller any commissions or listing fees.

DomainShed has given you some good tips, but if your still unsure, feel free to give us a call and discuss suitable pricing for your domain on 1300 665 866

Great answers but some obviously experienced domainers!
Another way of valuing a domain is to find out the value for the domain in the US market (which is normally quite available) for a similar domain and divide the result by 15 (population difference).
