I'm not sure if you've noticed but I've been silent the last few days. I'd like to say that this has been due to overwhelming workload and that there has just been too many things on my plate to write a fresh blog each day....but I'd be lying.
The truth of the matter is I've just purchased a new car. Generally speaking I don't like buying cars as I can't stand being continuously told "embellishments" and lies by the car salesperson. My 1991 bright yellow Mazda 121 (my friends call if a Noddy car after the children's character) runs on the smell of an oily rag and has been getting me from point A to point B for many years now.
 So what changed? Well, my wife had to drive my little Mazda the other day, she came home and told me to buy a new car. Not tomorrow or next week but right now. Guys, when your wife says buy a car you know it's time to changeover.
This was a real journey for me because I know absolutely nothing about cars other than you fill them up with gas and get a guy to fix them at regular intervals. On the other hand, I have the Lamborghini of computers running twin SLI video cards with three screens (capable of a fourth).
On reflection, me buying a car is like a new person entering the domain industry. You know nothing but you know the outcome will be pretty good if you can just get past the sharks trying to sell you their fraudulent traffic domains.
Being the analytical guy that I am I wrote my list of wants in a car. It had to look good, have an engine that worked as least as good as my good old Mazda but more importantly have every gadget that you could possibly want in a vehicle (ie. all the plastic button spots filled in). I went out (driving my Mazda, hey I wanted a trade-in!) and checked out the RX8 (I like Mazdas). Because I like making decisions quickly I went armed with my list and even my own calculator to cut a deal. I was in buying mode!
After asking for help the RX8 the salesman disappeared, even a page from the receptionist didn't bring him back. Not to worry, a young girl with fluorescent pink claws and bright orange hair ended up coming to help me out, needless to say I took a deep breath.
I felt like I'd entered the movie "Pretty Women" (Julia Roberts and Richard Gere) where the sales-girl had an attitude that the RX8 was just too expensive for me. I had the money but just couldn't get to the deal part! I felt like writing a cheque for all of them in the showroom to spite her but common sense prevailed and I left thoroughly discouraged. With a fresh sense of determination I set out into unfamiliar territory, after all my wife had sent me on a mission.
Just think about it, this is not too dissimilar to trying to buy a domain on one of the forums. You do your math and work out that given the traffic numbers the domain should be worth "X" but the buyer is absolutely convinced that it's worth "X+Y+Z..." In fact, quite often they'll tell you what they think of your offer for all to see. Newbie domainer then gets discouraged and becomes a lurker.
Last Friday I set out again and headed for the Subarus. The WRX is a nice all-wheel drive vehicle with a bit of grunt but did it pass the gadget test? Wrong, it failed miserably. That was when I discovered the Golf R32.
 I don't know what made me got to the VW showroom, it must have been "direct navigation". The first car I looked at was the R32, 184 kilowatts of power (ie. pocket-rocket) and more gadgets than the starship Enterprise. I was hooked! Now for the saleperson. Talk about helpful, in fact, he would've sold me all of the cars in the lot without blinking an eye and smiling all the way. The car satisfied my list, the process was easy and the people were a pleasure to do business with. I will be picking up my R32 on Thursday and I imagine that I'll be receiving my first speeding fine later in the afternoon. I think that I'll need to find a test track :-)
Selling domains to natural owners is more than just, "I've got a good domain" but it involves being a business person and providing an easy fluid process. This is why the Dark Blue Sea (DBS) and Buy Domains networks are so incredibly important for domainers. They provide the process and the smiling sales people. All we have to do is have the "R32.com".

In Oz the BMW and Mercs are way over priced not to mention the Porsches. Out here a new Boxter is nearly twice the price of the R32, but as indicated below the R32 is 'almost' just as much fun to drive as the boxster. I can't help thinking that if you can have as much fun in your car as in one twice as expensive... that's a good thing.
My biggest problem with Michael's car is that if I ever want to buy a new car, I'd have to think twice about the r32 just because it'd look like trying to keep up with the Gilmour's
But the GTI version on the other hand with the honeycomb grill...
