Last night I had the opportunity to pick the brains of one of the more colourful and knowledgeable people in the domain name industry. I first met Frederick Schiwek at Traffic in Las Vegas in 2004 and he immediately struck me as one of those crazy domainers that can't help but see opportunity at every turn. Needless to say we got on incredibly well and have become great friends ever since.
For the past 3.5 years Freddy, as he's known to his friends, has been spearheading the international business development efforts of one of Europe's largest and fastest growing registrars, EuroDNS. His amazing energy has seen him traveling from one corner of the globe to the other proclaiming the ccTLD mantra.
It was with great interest that I began asking him a number of questions.
What aspect of domaining to you like the best?
I absolutely love parking. Even though EuroDNS is no in parking it's exciting to see where parking is going and how it is evolving. More and more parking pages are beginning to look like micro-portals and this combined with the data of the web is really impressive.
I love ccTLDs but strangely they are not recognized by many domainers. I particularly like the small countries, maybe because they are more of a challenge to register. EuroDNS has put a lot of effort into solving the registration problems associated with many small ccTLDs and is one of the few registrars that is doing this.
What aspects of domaining do you like the least?
The policies of some of the ccTLDs really restrict business and this sometimes frustrates me because I can see the opportunities that they are throwing away. Like their policies the dispute processes often don't make a lot of sense. These are the main reasons why many of the big registrars don't promote a lot of the ccTLDs. EuroDNS has been working with many countries to assist them in resolving some of these difficulties.
What is EuroDNS best at?
We have made registrations easy for many of the ccTLDs and solved many of the problems with ccTLDs for domainers. This has only been possible through spending a lot of time and money on building good relationships with the registries. This really benefits all of our customers.
What are your views on domain tasting?
There is nothing wrong with domain tasting. There is a lot of error traffic in the market but when users receive a parked page this often assists them in reaching the destination that they are after. Even Google is starting to provide results for non-results pages by say, "did you mean" when a person makes a typo in the search box.
Why do some domainers not like tasting?
I think this is a really complex issue but I'm sure that there would be some that are jealous that they can't do it either because they don't have the ideas or technology to handle such large volumes of domains. After all it takes a degree of technical know-how to deal with huge volumes of domains in a manageable fashion.
I will continue the interview with Freddy in an article scheduled for publication tomorrow. He will be giving his thoughts on where he things dotMOBI will be going over the next few years and why he's so bullish about it.
